A speed reading test is a useful way to find out more about your reading rate. It quantitatively measures the number of words that you can read within a minute. You can usually take them on many speed reading websites, although they are also included in most speed reading software. An important consideration is that reading on a computer screen can be slower than on a paper, so you may have a slightly higher reading rate when reading from books and other paper-based reading material.
A speed reading test basically counts the number of words that you read within a minute. Doing a speed reading test is quite easy. What you do is just click the start button and proceed on reading the given set of text. After reading the whole text, you will then have to press the stop button. The speed reading test will then measure your reading rate based on the number of words that you have read on the given text and the time that has elapsed since you pressed the start button until you have pressed the stop button.
Furthermore, a good speed reading test incorporates a comprehension test. The comprehension test measures your comprehension ability when reading the text at that pace. The comprehension test is an important indicator as it tells a lot about your reading capabilities. This is because reading fast doesn’t necessarily translate to fast comprehension as well.
The average reading rate of people is at around 200 words per minute on a computer screen and 240 words per minute on paper, with around 60% comprehension rate. That is the ordinary reading rate for most people. If the results of your speed reading test indicate that you are an average or slow reader, then you may want to try out a speed reading program to increase your reading rate.
