The King Edward Hotel Toronto is part of a chain of hotels called Le Méridien. This was officially called Le Méridien King Edward Hotel and was designed by architects Henry Ives Cobb from Chicago and E.J. Lennox from Toronto. This property was opened for business in 1903.

In 1981, the hotel was refurbished after several years of decline by Stanford Downey Architects Inc. There was an unusual crystal ballroom that was added to the top of the hotel in 1921 that was in service up until the 1950s, but this was not restored along with the rest of the building.

Some of the famous people who stay in this hotel over years are Louis Armstrong, Mark Twain, Elvis Presley, Rudolph Valentino, Margaret Thatcher, Ernest Hemingway and Britney Spears. In 1964, the Beatles also stayed in the royal suite at the hotel on their first visit to city of Toronto and they caused the biggest uproar to date with over 3,000 fans lining the streets and the hotel lobby. In the midst of all this, as you can imagine there was some sort of scandal and this happened in 1964 when Richard Burton and Liz Taylor shared a suite and they were not married.
