Roasting coffee beans produces a heavenly aroma like no other. According to a lot of coffee lovers, this is the best drink to start the day. In order to appreciate the roasting methods and process, it is significant to point its importance and fully enjoy the true pleasure coffee brings.
Coffee beans can trace its roots in Ethiopia. The Ethiopians discovered the pleasures of coffee and they guarded its existence carefully until some plants have been smuggled out to the Dutch. It is in Arabia, in Sufi monasteries of Yemen that the earliest credible evidence of coffee drinking appears. This is where roasting coffee beans began. Coffee has been enjoyed by many people since 1800s when the first roasting equipment was introduced. Roasting coffee beans are also done at home; they grind the beans and brew the freshest coffee.
There are two approaches to roast coffee beans at home. But these can be done with the proper equipment and types of appliances. One way of roasting coffee beans at home is the use of a baking sheet inside an oven. However, the disadvantage of doing this type of roasting is the inconsistency of the outcome. Hot air roasters or drum machines are the only appliances that can ensure a consistent roast coffee beans according to the desired strength.
There are specific things that must be done to successfully roast coffee beans. One must have a legit and certified organic green coffee beans. Secondly, a coffee machine is needed to give an even roast.
When roasting the coffee beans, one must observe the changes in the scent and in the beans. The coffee beans will produce a sweet aroma during the roasting process, at the same time, it will also change in color and they will start to swell and pop. Their color will turn to light brown; this is called a light roast. After the nine-minute point, a rapid process begins and the beans begin to change color at an accelerated rate. The beans will pop again and at the 15th minute mark, it’s called the French roast. Just a few minutes after that, it’s the espresso roast. Then, one can enjoy the tenderness, the waking feeling and the powerful force coffee can bring.
