Inmost countries around the world, heart diseases is the leading cause of death among the general population. Usually, individuals with heart ailments seek urgent medical help as soon as they experience chest pain, shortness of breath, cold sweat and dizziness. The aforementioned symptoms connote a heart attack which can paralyze or even kill a person in a matter of minutes. However, there has been a growing concern for a different type of heart condition known as silent heart attack. Seriously, silent heart attack is fatal because people may not feel anything at all – no pain nor shortness of breath. From a medical perspective, silent heart attack is also known as silent ischemia. This article provides a short outline of what a silent heart attack is all about and the risks associated with it.
Silent heart attack is a heart ailment which can cause death. It is often rare but once it strikes, the person has a high chance of dying. Silent heart attack or silent ischemia occurs when the heart does not receive adequate amount of oxygen as well as blood. Any lack of supply of those life-giving elements would cause the heart to fail. The body, especially the brain can be damaged when it does not receive adequate oxygen supply transported by the blood. So if the heart fails to pump blood properly, then a silent heart attack ensues.
What is the root cause of silent heart attack? Well, it’s a combination of unhealthy eating habits and a sedentary lifestyle. Commonly, people love fatty food such as bacon, steak, burgers and other meat products that have bad cholesterol. Likewise, those who are overweight are potato couch or office workers who have a sedentary lifestyle for the rest of the week. As a result, arteries are blocked by plaque from fat which is known as atherosclorosis. The heart slowly gets scarred as plaque fills the arteries until such a time that pain is felt. When this happens, the disease is on an advanced stage since silent heart attack can go on for years unnoticed. Only ECG and EKG tests would reveal later the extent of damage in your arteries.
A way of preventing silent heart attack is to develop good habits like quit smoking, eat healthy food and exercise daily. If you develop such good habits , you are not only helping yourself but doing your loved ones a very big favor.
