Here are some car paint repair tips that you can apply:
To see if your car requires professional service, you need to determine the severity of the damage. Assess your car for the type of painting damage it has – if it’s just a nick or a deeper one.
Make sure that you know your car’s paint color and shade. You may refer to the paint maker’s catalog or to your car’s color coding sticker. You may call your car dealer for assistance.
Remove your car’s protective coating and wax using a prep solvent. Your car can develop surface lumps when the protective coating is covered with paint which separates it from the original coat.
You can smoothen surface by sanding out the lumps. Using 240-grit or 320-grit sandpaper can help you get the job done. Rushing won’t help you finish an even surface. To even out deeper damage, you can use 800-grit sandpaper.
Check the paint’s preparation and application instructions before applying onto your car.
If you want to match your car’s original color, apply several coats of base paint on the damaged surface. Just make sure to let each coat dry for at least 15 minutes before reapplying.
Keep your car in a garage or any dry covered area to protect it while drying the paint. Let it dry for at least 24 hours.
Reapply wax or clear protective coat before taking your car out again.
Separately apply the base paint and clear protective coat on your car’s surface to help match its original color. It’s not good to use nail polish to cover the damage when doing car paint repair since it’s not long-lasting.
A full car repaint may be necessary if the damage cannot be fixed just by sanding. And if you are unsure of doing a car paint repair in your garage, don’t hesitate to consult the pros.
