Chronic pelvic pain is a medical condition that commonly affects women. While majority of its causes are due to issues in the reproductive organs of a woman, it can also affect men as well, albeit because of other causes. Chronic pelvic pain is exemplified by a pelvic pain that continues for up to 6 months or more. The part of the body affected is below the belly button. The intensity of the pain may vary from each case due to the different underlying causes of chronic pelvic pain. Some people may experience recurring mild aches while others experience intense debilitating pain.

As emphasized earlier, chronic pelvic pain are brought about by different underlying conditions. One of the major causes of chronic pelvic pain is issues within the female reproductive system hence the high incidence rate among women. Some of these conditions of the female reproductive organ include primary dysmenorrhea, vulvodynia, endometriosis, uterine fibroids, pelvic joint instability, adenomyosis, pelvic congestion syndrome, pelvic infection, cervical stenosis, and many more.

Another cause of chronic pelvic pain is the existence of scar tissue following an infection or surgery. Psychological trauma may also bring chronic pelvic pain as women who went through sexual or physical abuse frequently have this condition. In some cases, the causes of chronic pelvic pain are not gender specific and this includes diseases of the urinary tract or bowel, such as irritable bowel syndrome and interstitial cystitis. Furthermore, patients who have been through a treatment for the underlying condition of their chronic pelvic pain may still undergo neuropathic pain wherein the affected nerve still continues on sending pain signals.

The treatment for chronic pelvic pain also differs from each cases as it seeks to deal with the underlying cause. Chronic pelvic pain caused by hormones or menstruation are treated using birth control pills and hormone therapy. Doctors may also conduct a surgery to remove a growth, cyst, or tumor that is causing the chronic pelvic pain. Drugs are also employed for treatment like antibiotics for infection, or pain relievers to help in easing the pain.
